DESERT OBSERVATORY

Design Excellence Fall 2011

Arizona's abundance of natural sunlight has become a trademark of the grand canyon state, aside from the expansive desert landsape and the grand canyon itself. My research and architectural design focused on capturing the daily and seasonal movement of light by emphasis through visble stimuli.

Natural light movement is both a daily and seasonal progression. The architecture becomes the framework to capture the progression of light and the unique views of the landscape. Each programmatic module contains directional skylight openings which create a unique beam-like effect within each space. The designed promenade propels visitors through a series of outdoor and indoor spaces that capture different views of the landscape. The promenade also disperses public and private spaces offering an organized means of separation.
